I made this burial urn for my Uncle who passed away recently.

Wood is Tiger maple with a hand rubbed oil varnish. The lid is black walnut.
I cut the dovetails with my 24" Leigh Super jig. Note that I retouched out some of the carved text, (full name, and date) for privacy.

This also marks the first project to come out of my shop since Hurricane Irene came through. After 2.5 months I am back up and running.
Lesson learned, never place anything of any value near a river. I was fortunate to only receive a couple inches of water in my shop but it was still quite a mess.

Thanks. He did not get to see this one, but he did get to see the urn I made for his Wife a couple of years ago.

Beautiful Michael,

Excellent choice of woods and finish - I'm sure he would be proud.
Glad you're back up and making chips. Difficult times...

Beautiful work Michael. Know exactly where you are coming from with natural disasters. Two and a half years after the disastrous Victorian bushfires in Australia we are still doing rebuilding work just about everyday. We use our Buddy to help others mainly replacing destroyed house names. We lost 3,300 homes and 170 people.

i like the way you put the walnut down lower into the frame of the lid. I have never been able to "dial in" my jig so i can get good doevetails, i mighht need to get some advice from you. Your project turned out great.

I guess its really true..."Ashes to Ashes, Dust to dust..."
R.I.P Uncle George:(

That is a nice and fitting tribute....good job

Very nice. Almost makes me want to buy a dovetail jig. What did you use to get the square edge cuts on the cross. Also what are the width and depth dims of the cross?
