Gears and a clock

I had some time this weekend to make a clock. I started off by thinking I would go with a pendulum and weight but I wanted to be done in a day, I did not want to waste the time playing with the timing of a swinging pendulum. So I bought an AC synchronous gear motor and figured the gear ratio from the motor. The motor spins at 6 RPM. The math from the motor is 6:1 for seconds then 60:1 for minutes and 12:1 for hours. Total gear ration it 4,320:1 .

Ryan where did you source the synchron motor from? Do you have any issues with it running hot?

inkscape makes gears for free, Gear Template Generator by mathias Wandel is $26.00 and a good deal. I have that, if you need some made let me know i'll make you some.

I ring gear? Are you talking about a gear with teeth on the interior, like the one on the right in attached picture?

As an engineer, I really should know this, but I haven't done any gear design beyond the work I did in college 20 yrs ago. Do you just make the circles tangent in order to obtain the center to center distance of the gear?

The gadget creates a circle named pitch diameter. Use the radius of the pitch diameter to get the center to center.

Yes, I am working on a movement system for "rocket launchers" I want to combine a left to right pivot and an up and down pivot. I can accomplish each independantly but can't quite get them to work together. Of the gear programs/widgets I have tryed the ones that can export a file I can use can't make the gears I need and visa versa. I hate to go and buy software for a one-time project.

The gear was created with the Gear Gadget. I created the ring gear by selecting the gear and circle(pitch diameter) the used the weld option. You will then need to draw an outer circle. Hope this helps
