Router Speed Setting

Having adjusted the speed dial on my supplied router while trying to get it to go at all (not then knowing that it is turned on by the software) I now have the speed dial in some random position and am fairly sure that it is the WRONG random position. Is the dial position wood/bit/cutting speed dependent or is there a particular speed that is generally good for all?

I just finished my first pass through it and didn't really get much about router spindle speed. I understand that it seems to be a part of the chipload calculation; but was hoping for the mythical golden setting that probably doesn't exist...

Chazz, without knowing what bit you are using and what material you are cutting and not knowing the router settings(we went spindle) can't even get you in the ballpark. A few times when I've cut a new material (Ebony,Dymondwood) the guys have gotten me start points very quickly. You'll have to start conservative, but start.
