So I just upgraded my 2005 PRT Alfa 96 x48 to the 7.2 drives.

Can I use the old drives and motors to run an indexer?
I have found a wood lathe to convert to a belt drive for the steppers.
I have an opportunity to make some gun stocks for a guy who makes repro black powder guns.

I have made a lot of strange stuff on my bot and have always wanted an indexer.

On the software side I just got V Carve pro. Should I upgrade to Aspire? or is there a cheaper choice to get the most from the indexer.

Thanks

you still need a stepper motor (indexer motor) and not just a lathe. Previously you could insert a lathe if you wanted constant A/B axis movement while x,y,z moved but with the new software upgrade that eliminates the need for the lathe. Unless you need a faster spin to do things like sanding parts.

Thanks Jack
I am going to add the stepper motor to the lathe I ordered. With a belt reduction.
Since I have the direct drive steppers left over from my 7.2 upgrade, I will be shooting for a 10 : 1 reduction.

Also has anyone used their indexer for 3-d scanning?
I was thinking along the lines of mounting the scanning cameras on the Y car and then having the Shop bot slowly turn the indexer as the Y car moved across the part.

Thanks

Lathe came today. Had to cut on it a bit for it to fit. Got the B axis worked out and will order belts and pulleys Monday.

Made some air cuts today (just watching the B axis) and it seems to be working correctly.

Long way to go but getting there. I LIKE IT !!

Got my pulleys and belts (one spare) ordered today.
I will start off at 3.6 or 4.0 :1 ratio , Depending if I can machine the smaller of the drive pulleys to fit.

The plan is to possibly move up to 10:1 ratio after I get the indexer working and cut a larger driven gear out of plastic or G-10.

The new lathe was here about 15 minutes before I took the "Death Wheel" to it.

Got the pulleys today.
I was able to sneak in the 14mm bore in the 18 tooth pulley.
72 Driven pulley gives me 4:1 ratio.

Hi Tom,

Congratulations on your new membership to the indexer club.

Looks like it will work well for you. I see gun stocks coming in the near future.:)

It is a fun project and has let me make some small parts I could not before.
I also have a 3 jaw chuck mounted now when needed.

3D scanner should be here this week:D
