This is actually an offshoot of the box joint project (long thread under "Projects") but I thought this test sample is cute enough to show off in the Show+Tell section.

This is a matchbox made from 0.1" Cocobolo and Alder. I just drum sanded some thin lumber pieces to that thickness that I bought at Rockler a while ago. The outer shell and the drawer are both finger jointed with 0.08" finger width. All cut with a 1/16" diameter ballnose bit.

Now, why did I do that?
- test the software
- fun thing to do
- gadget to give to my brother in law.

For that matter, it could be a jewelry box for rings or earrings as well.

Very nice work I really appreciate quality box work . I make alot of boxs for gifts and I haven't tried any corner joints yet with my bot. was it a easy set-up did you do it on V-carve?

Nicely done - wish I had your programming mindset and skills!
As for the machining - seems the smallest stuff fascinates me the most - watching the cnc dancing so accurately on such a tiny scale is nothing short of astonishing.

Scott,

I am ignorant, so I'm going to ask... did you orient the grain across the box due to cutting characteristics? Or did you do it that direction because you like the look? What gave you the inspiration to do it in that orientation?

Beautiful work. (As always!)

Thanks,

Monty

M. , Seeing as I've got the Desktop and had new wood last week, Just wanted to use 24" and 2 boards for some continuty and wanted to use only 2 boards. After seeing how it cut, I think I could have cut much closer spacing and used 2 22" pieces out of the same walnut board and alternated "A" and "B" boards so that grain pattern "wrapped" around the box. I think it would have looked good instead of going for contrast. There will be enough contrast to show off cuts just in the difference between end grain/face grain with the Tung oil. Pure luck-I was flying by the seat of my pants on this one. Make SURE to use an extra spoilboard and Don't wander too far from G's defaults. I cut at 90IPM with a .25" MillMonster BN at 14.5K and the Desktop seem to like it-No resonance. I did change depth of cut to 1/3 bit diameter and may leave it for a bit. WILL change my "cut through" back so it's closer to Gert's as it went WAY too deep. May try a "candlebox" with 1/4" stock before I get back to "Real"work:)
