After burning up a carbide bit as well as a few other applications I can use it for I decided to get an infrared thermometer with laser on it. I'm glad I looked online instead of buying local, found this place...

I purchased the LT100, for $41 and free shipping I got far more than I expected. It's a decent little tool, doesn't feel flimsy or cheap and works well.

Amazon.com also has a number of "laser thermometers" on their site. Some for about $40, and some more.

What I can't determine is how far away can they be from what you are trying to measure. 5 feet? 15 feet? 100 feet? Having a "distance to spot ratio" of 9:1 doesn't mean anything to me.

Distance(D):Spot(S) ratio. That means at 9" it is taking the temp of a 1" diameter circle. I've seen 12:1 and 20:1 units. Generally, the higher the D the more expensive the unit. The relationship is linear, so a 9:1 reads a 2" diameter circle at 18" and so on.

Most inexpensive models will read up to about 4 to 6 feet. I saw one unit with a 60:1 rated at 100 feet. The price wasn't listed and I believe in the "if you have to ask..." theory.

The one I got works great, it does all I need.
