View Full Version : I'm having an issue with my bits...

A little over 2 weeks back, the machine was working fine. I'd been cutting signs for people for our school organization, and the bit I was using for pretty much all of these signs was a 90 degree .5 in. V-bit. I'm not sure what happened over about a day I was away from it, because noone had touched it in that time, and I find that the machine is now cutting entirely too shallow. I assumed at first I just needed to increase the depth slightly, so I tried that. Nothing cut any deeper. This was a minor issue with the first sign I cut, as the letters were pretty good-sized, but for some reason it was alot more shallow than normal. Then I cut another sign, and it was very much too shallow, the the point where a bridge on an n was pretty much non-existent. I tried cutting a new one using a much more narrow V-bit, in the hopes that it would have a positive effect on the cut, but this time it didn't even cut the board at all.

I'm wondering if this is a problem with ShopBot or PartWorks.

Markos,
Are you running the Z-Zero routine to the top of your material each time you change the bit or material?

Yes, yes I am. I originally wondered if there was something in that that was causing issues, but what I thought came out as nothing.

If you want, e-mail me your .crv file from partworks and I'll look at it.

I'll get that to you as soon as I can. I'll use the e-mail on your profile, right?

Have you had the chance to look at it yet? I greatly appreciate the help.

Have you checked the Z axis for problems? Slipping pinion gear? Tool slipping in collet. Router slipping up in the holder (if you are using a router)? Variance in material thickness?

Markos, I never received your e-mail!

Unfortunately, all of those things Scott mentions here can also be the problem. It's worth checking them out. In the meanwhile, if I get your e-mail with the crv file, maybe you can eliminate one problem.

I tried to send it, but I think the fact that the mailing system is case sensitive proved why it didn't go through. Regardless, it has been sent.
