Cutting white oak 3D, final pass with 1/16 tapered ballnose. Speed 1.25ips. Cut depth .035. Router speed 16000. Anybody cut at a lower speed, would cut down on noise running even 13000, gets to you after running for 4 hrs (so far). Thanks to anyone who's been there..........

In this case, it's the router noise, not the bit cutting noise. Hate to run it for so many hrs at a higher speed than necessary.

Lou, You might be able to reduce the routers speed. Back when I was running my PorterCable router on my PR I always wore ear protection.

Although i always wear ear protection but with a PC router i find a marked increase in decibel level from the 10k speed to the 13k speed. You might find that a sharper, better quality bit allows you to slow the router down some.

PC routers,
I have an acquaintence who worked at ITW, the majority of the noise is the air, they found it is at nearly super-sonic , try covering the intake
you will be amazed how much it reduces the noise.
I once removed the fan from a 31/4 hp PC and replaced with a "muffin" 110v . Made it bearable.

A major factor that makes spindles quieter is that the cooling fan speed is independent of the motor speed. On a router the fan speed increases with the motor speed.

Carl -
Any more info on the fan removal/muffin replacement? Part number, price, etc? Did it cool the router as much as the fan? Any info appreciated.

Lou, I have cut 3D in red oak at 10,000rpm and 1.5ips speed with a 1/8" tapered ball nose, 0.005 offset on the tool path. Noise is reduced to a comfortable level. James
