Hey Cliff,

ShopBot's been working on options to cut fabric and other soft materials using a couple of different blades, including the round Olfa cutters that look like pizza cutters. The cutter holders are rotated with an extra stepper motor (which becomes the 4th axis) and could fit in the existing router mount. The current version lets you tilt the blade and it calculates the angle that the cutter needs to be inserted and withdrawn from the material as a 3d move.

The rotary cutters work well for curvy shapes but the trick has been to get sharp inside corners like you would need for a rectangular mat...we're looking at a couple of options. It's an "under development" project at the moment but if you're interested in finding out more send ShopBot an email and tell them you're interested in cutting mat board.
