Aluminum coating

I have some alum. letters that will be outside. I would like to coat them with a clear spray. Any suggestions. Also I am getting lots of pattern lines when I am spraying black matthews paint on the aluminum. I think a clear coat will resolve that problem. True?

Have them powder coated or use Permalac (http://www.permalac.com/)
