So, my girlfriend's parents have been participating in a boat building contest for the last few years called the Minimal Regatta. It takes place in Key West, Fl every year at a bar called Schooner Wharf during Memorial Day weekend. This year the contest is May 25.

This is the interesting part for ShopBotters:

Minimal Regatta Construction Rules
1. One sheet of 4' x 8' x 1/4" plywood
2. Two 2" x 4" x 8'
3. One pound of fasteners
4. One roll of 2" x 60 yard duct tape
5. No caulking or adhesives - Epoxy paint is permitted
6. Painting of boats is optional

I'm sure there are some people in Key West with bots, but for others interested in a reason to go to Key West this is a good one. My girlfriend's father lives in New Mexico and mails his boat parts to another friend in Key West and then reconstructs. They are pretty tough competition in the Creative Design and Costume categories

I'm a huge fan of contests involving using minimal materials for design and construction. The one sheet of plywood restriction for a boat should perk a few wet ears up here

There are a number of videos on YouTube if you search on Minimal Regatta.

I'll be there this year. I hope I see some of you!
