For a recent set, we had to put down a 24' x 60' saltillo tile floor. Since we have only 3 days to install and less than a day to remove it, real tile is out of the question. Prefab tile boar wasn't the right size. So we cut it ourselves out of tempered hardboard (the stuff that used to be called "duron" and before that "masonite"). Before cutting we applied random patches of vinyl cement texture (that gives the top surface some life). The tool of choice was an 1/4" end mill with a slight round over. The paint department handled the 4 layer paint job.

The grating in the lower edge was to drain water that spilled across the stage every night.

I can't tell from the photos... did you just cut the tile pattern into 4x8 sheets and lay them down... or did you cut individual tiles and lay them like regular tiles? How did you secure them?

Very convincing... from the photos I would have just thought it was a tile floor.

We used 4 x 8 sheets, countersunk drywall screws were the fasteners, mostly set in the "grout" spaces.
