Pinion gears and need help

Its time to change my gears. Once I tried to remove the pinion gear on the z motor I found it impossible to break the blue locktite on the allen nuts. I applied so much heat that the gear was smoking (not sure of the temperature). I even broke one nut and have tried 3 different times.

Should i use a propane torch for more heat?
Should I use a soldering iron for more pin point heat?
Should i try and soak the gear in acetone?
I dont like the idea of drilling out the nuts but would that work?

I am open for any suggestion that will work.

Feel your pain... I've changed hundreds of them when I was doing service work for ShopBot. I always carried a good brand of 1/8" hex allen socket on a 1/4" drive ratchet to loosen the grub (set) screws, and an armature puller to remove stuck gears from the shaft. Heat from the torch helps

I tried everything that i had. I even have a larger driver. I dont have a propane torch but do have the electric heat gun. I guess i will buy a mini propane torch. Have you ever had to drill out a nut?

now the pinion gears have smaller setscrews so it makes it even harder.

Maybe an impact wrench (battery powered) with a good quality allen wrench mounted in a 3/8" or 1/4" drive socket?.....joe

that is a good way. I need to see ifI can find a small enough one for the new smaller pinion set screws.

Google screw extractor. The type I've used has a left hand drill and another bit to dig into the hole you drill. It works. If you don't have time to wait, I'd just drill it out. If you ding the shaft, just sand it out. If it were me, I'd just drill it out.

thanks i do have a new butane torch coming along with a better set of allen head driver bits. If that fails i will move forward with drilling it out.

Finally done with the pinion gears. On a scale of 1-10, the z axis was an 88, the y was a 1 and the x a 3. Heat seemed to be the trick but the z axis was murder.
