A friend has asked me to make some minor changes in a house plan that he purchased. The drawing format is DWG. I opened it in Aspire but it is not suitable. I'm hoping someone suggest a free CAD editing program.

Hi Phil - I'd highly recommend Sketchup. They still have a free version. Oops - looks like it only opens skp jpg and png's. Always a catch.
However, if anyone you know has a paid version, you could have them import, save as a sketchup file and you're good.

Thanks but I tried Sketchup, only the pro version can open DWG files.
If they are just small changes just print it out and change with white-out and a pen.
DWG is autocad. If there is a drafting teacher at your high school, they may have software that could open it. Otherwise see if he has it saved as a DXF. Aspire can import those.
Not sure how well dwg is supported, but.....

You can still get the 2017 version of SketchUp for free. It's perfectly relevant for use today. You might need an extension to import DXF and DWG files however.
Thank you to all. I've downloaded Qcad and it suits my needs. As Russ suggested I found a converter to work as a DXF file.
