Looks like there's some backlash in the Z if you're getting a slight ridge like your pics show. Did you loosen the Z motor plate, disengage the pinion from the rack and re-engage it again? Because what you show is typical of an axis with a worn pinion (tip of gear worn) that hasn't been adjusted to take up the lash created by wear. Pinions are consumables by the way...you probably want to order a set of 4 from shopbot.
