Why don't you try annealing the plastic by putting it in an oven on low temperature for a while.

I've never used the masking you are talking about but I have heard stories of vinyl not sticking because of shelf life!!! (vinyl sitting around too long)

I have a brand new dell computer (cheap) running windows 8.1, control software 3.8.12 and haven't had a problem yet. With the exception of the red stop button so I just use the space bar if needed....

I guess, a bigger question would be if it is cast material or extruded. Cast is what you want. Can't really tell what it is by just looking at a picture.
