Default Looking for advice on selling used CNC machine

We're looking to sell one of our CNC machines. Don't worry - it's not our ShopBot. In fact, proceeds from the sale will be going to fund another CNC machine that I'm building. Just can't get enough of these things!

We're looking for advice from those with experience selling used CNC's or other high-dollar/technical/potentially dangerous equipment.

Advice on handling/accepting a large payment?

Advice on crating/shipping a large/heavy machine with delicate tolerances?

How to deal with expectations from someone who may be new to CNCs? How to provide a reasonable amount of support for setting up a complex machine without quitting your day job to become a full-time tech support specialist?

Is there a need to protect ourselves in case the new owner gets hurt using the machine?

Is this type of equipment assumed to be sold "as-is" or does that need to be stated in a contract? Other details that are important to get in writing?

    Thanks for the help!

I haven't taken pictures of the machine or written an ad yet, so I don't have a lot of details to share.

It's not a ShopBot, so I don't plan to advertise the sale on this forum. But, I figured selling advice was a general topic that was relevant to many of the participants here.

The machine is a large bench top, 3-axis with moving gantry, servo drives, ball screws and ball slides, 2.25 hp router for spindle. It was built by a reputable company and is in good working order.

We're selling because we've upgraded in size/speed and don't need 2 machines. I have at least one interested buyer already. I'm looking for a sale that's fair to both parties and that doesn't require a lot of time/headaches on my part.

Between the cabinet guys and the sign shop guys on this forum, I figure there's lots of people here with experience selling industrial equipment. Any advice or stories about past experiences will be appreciated.

I've crated and shipped LOTS of equipment.
Right now our shop is closing and I get most of it ready to ship to which ever other plant.

if you can give me the nominal size of the equipment and aproximate weight I can draw up a quick shipping crate.

I am assuming you are shipping ConUS to ConUS and by covered truck.

You will also need a fork truck most likley or the cost will jump up considerably.

If you add up the costs of what it takes for you to crate and rent a fork truck, you could "discount" that costs for a local buyer and still come out ahead. a local buyer also simplifies the money transfer which should be done at a bank.

Shopbot must have some dxf's of what they cut to ship shopbots. You could ask them maybe? It was just a pallet with 4 sides and a top not much to it. What was unique was the clips they used to secure the various pieces together.
