The rotary phase converter Its calibrated "balanced "to give you a guarantee variation in volts never greater than plus 5 volts or minus 5 volts .
smooth power, no spikes up or large drops down in voltage
It is necessary for voltage sensitive machines such as a CNC
a static phase converter would not be a good choice for this reason-

That the best I understand it hope that helps Dana

Tony, I just never heard the term used that way, it implied there was another power supply involved.

    Glad to learn something new.

Default single phase /10 hp VFD working

    thanks for the input again
My new /used PRT is up and running
    I found a lightly used 10 hp delta VFD-B
right here on the forum . great place for that kind of thing .
It was almost plug and play
a few parameters needed to be changed
wires had to be lengthened - all in all not to bad

    Default 3 phase single

    Don,
Can I bother you for a question? I bought what I think is a used HSD 4 HP 230V 3-Phase Spindle but I have Single Phase power. I'm kind of new to this and I am trying to get things set up for the first time. Can you give me some more specifics on how to connect this, or direct me to where I can find details? I have looked all over this forum and alot of people talk about doing it, but I can't find the specifics on how do to it.
    Thanks,

    Dave

I bought a 3hp, 3ph spindle. Bought an unrelated 7hp 3ph VFD. I now run it all on 220, single phase. VFD can accept either 220 1ph or 220 3ph with no changes except how the power wires are connected and output 3phase to the spindle. No factory modifications necessary for my setup and I haven't experienced any downsides to it to date. And I'm also doing the same on my smaller CNC with a 1hp 3ph spindle and a different VFD.

That being said, I know of machinists who run a shop full of CNC equipment with 30hp or so phase converters...no problem.

    Good luck!

As far as hooking it up single phase, that part is easy. Where your 3 clamps for hooking up the 3 hot leads are just use 2 of them for your 2 hot leads from your 220 power source. This will result in half the output of the 3 phase so you have in affect a 2HP convertor. Fine for a HSD 2.2 spindle. Programming it requires careful following of instructions in the manual. If you don't have one then contact an HSD distributor. Easy to locate with web search)
