Default drill bit set with common shank?

We do alot of drilling and not as much milling. We are on the lookout for a set of drill bits that all have the same size shank to fit our collets, we have a 1/4 & 1/2. We talked with McMaster Carr, they had mentioned a hex set of bits, I assume like the quick change kind and find an adapter that would fit the collet. I didn't know if anyone else had done/does this?? I thought it might be too much for the adapter to hold the bit... I should add we mainly work with plastics and aluminum.

See this link on McMaster for 1/4 inch and 3/8 and 1/2 inch shank sets:

Thanks for the link we actually just bought and are returning those bits. Only the larger bits are shanked down the smaller bits are not shanked up.. McMasters is giving us credit and paying to ship them back. They are also updating the description.

we are looking into the hex/quick change type bits

I wouldn't suggest the hex shanked bits and an adapter. I've never found either an adapter or a driver that held them tight. What spindle or router do you have? Can you mount a high end electric drill to you z axis and use that to drill the holes? If by chance you have a spindle on your machine, only thing i might try is a chuck adapter. Might be worth a look into buying a chuck and shank off of a drill press and having a machine shop shorten and turn the shaft down to 1/2" for your chuck.

    I use these - http://www.wealdentool.com/acatalog/..._Dowel_51.html

They don't ship over the pond but I'm sure someone over there must make something similiar.

I haven't seen boring bits in "Imperial" shanks.

I'd suggest using Amana boring bits. (see link below).
They have a 10mm shank, which is std on many euro machines. (line boring/hinge machines, etc).

The bummer of course is the up-front need to buy a bunch of 10mm collets.
