Default What to do with Saw Dust?

It seems like there ought to be a better use for the Saw Dust coming from wood working tools and our CNC ShopBot.

It pains me to dump it into the garbage can, but what else can be done with it?

I know my Grandfather used it to cover his ice in the Ice Cellar after the ice was cut out or the frozen river. The ice lasted a long time, but that was in the days long gone by.

    George...
Trade the hardwood chps & dust for heating pellets. Or make your own!

if you only cut solid wood then it is not too hard to find a home as long as you don't have bad woods in there like walnut. But if you cut plywood and mdf then the garbage is the only method.

You can also use it as a soil suppliment...but no nasties like plastic, MDF or plywood.

Here in Lancaster, pa I used to take the barrels of saw dust to a dairy farm and dump for free. He used it for bedding. Now I have a guy come and pick it up and he pays me $1.25 per barrel. He resells it for bedding to farmers. Between that and cutting up my scraps and giving it away for kindling, there is very little that ever ends up in the dump.

I give it away to people who use it for plant bedding or in horse stalls or in their compost bins.

I have a sawdust fired heater for the workshop.

I've started using oak and beech to smoke fish as well.

    Same here.
We have farming folk on the island
who come by and take our chips and dust away for animal bedding and similar agro-uses.

Otherwise it's just a fire hazard! -get rid of it somehow anyhow.
