    Default Lock and Load, People.

I'm a big fan of Sci-fi. That might be just a bit of an understatement...
Anyway, I have been getting up to speed with the use of my Shopbot the last few months....and carving all kinds of pieces.

I was working on a couple websites and sign designs this morning and just couldn't stand not to hear the bot carving. I thought I'd throw on a little pink insulation foam and run something. What to carve?

I decided a m41a Pulse rifle from the movie "Aliens" seemed like a good idea.
A quick visit to the google 3d warehouse provided an "ok" model...

I coated it with a thin layer of resin, and added some paint. It's far from accurate or perfect...but a fun thing to have around. I doubt anybody who comes in the shop will have the slightest clue it's pink insulation foam.

Nice Job Doug! What kind of resin did you use if you don't mind me asking? I have had trouble finding a coating that works well.

Pretty cool! We've cut mp40's handheld lasers and staff weapons for the Stargate series. We've even sculpted two inch long 50 cals for set models. Pretty convincing once our painters were finished with them, some were used as mold masters when we had to cast multiple units for extras to hold. - Boyd

In this case, the resin was regular smooth-on casting resin. I brushed on a thin coat, just to give it a little protection. There are certainly other coatings...styrospray, west systems epoxy, etc. This wouldn't hold up under any real use, but it's a nice, thin protection.

I'd love to see some of the work you did for Stargate! I was always very impressed with the amount of work that had to go into producing those shows in such a short time span. It's one of a few shows where costumes quickly became more like props than costumes. I was thinking while making the pulse rifle that if I had to produce a large number of props in a short time span...a cnc mold and then foam castings would be the ticket.
