Default sign size vs distance guidelines

A customer is going to the planning board next week trying to get an increase in the size of sign allowed for her business which is grandfathered in a residential zone. Are there any studies which relate letter size, speed of vehicle, distance to sign, angle of sign to road, and maybe even contrasting colors to overall vehicle safety? If I can give her some data before her meeting they might allow her new sign to be larger and more read-able from the street.

There are any number of charts out there when you Google "Sign visibility charts" Here is one I find helpful...

Here's another link to publications of the sign council that might answer more specifically your questions...
