    Default epoxy

Hey. I am making a small table top for a friends boat and wondered about using epoxy to fill the vcarved letters instead of inlaying wood. Anyone have tips or suggestions?

I would use a liquid polyurethane, like Smoothon 325 etc.

I have used it a lot for applications like that the inlay below all the black was filling in a 3/16 deep pocket I use west systems epoxy the pigment used was concrete color available at most building supply stores.

Inlay was done in 2005 and still looks perfect.

The west systems used is the 5 to 1 ratio stuff I buy in bulk

I have used epoxy to fill vcarved letters and liked the results.

Before cutting, I coated the board with a clear coat. I think that I used several coats of polyurethane but epoxy would probably work with one coat. After cutting, I thickened the epoxy filler with microballoons and colored it, then spread it to fill the letters. After the epoxy dried I sanded to level and remove residue and then covered with polyurethane.

Glen, I do a fair amount of presentation plaques and also tables, use CRystal Sheen for a coating.

I precoat with acrylic clearcoat and sand no holes or bumps use a border or dam on the top edges on tables.

Glen - I just finished two bar tables with v-carved inlays. I poured colored epoxy into the v-carvings then coated both table tops with about 3/16" super clear epoxy. Then I coated with 3 coats of varnish to protect the epoxy.

The customer was SUPER happy with the results.

Thanks guys. I decided to do this one with black walnut inlay instead of the epoxy fill. I haven't done epoxy fill before and think I should do some testing and trials before I do a customers project and risk potential failure or have issues. Here is couple pics of it before I start the finishing.
    Cheers,
