Trophy plaque brass (or equiv) metal

I am a high school teacher who just obtained a 4x8 shopbot. I have already had requests to make plaques for awards. I would like a source for the brass metal material, could be an equivalent, with the black background.

In my internet searches, I just keep coming up with trophy shops who want to sell the piece engraved already.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sometimes they use engravers stock plastic which has 2 layers. The top layer is a fake metal and the 2nd layer is the black (or other colours). When you engrave the top layer away the bottom layer shows through. Otherwise you can use brass plate and colour the engraved letters. I am not sure of suppliers other than http://www.rowmark.com/rotary/Rotary..._Materials.asp.

You can frequently find that stuff on E Bay in small quantities. I have found that the engraving plastic is quite useful but be careful. The thinner stuff is fragile, the surface is thin. Stick with the 1/8 stuff. Also you can buy the brass plate already cut to size and save a lot of hassle.

Look up a place like "Metals4U" or your local metal shop. Brass is not that tough to find. A lot of plaques are not made of real wood or real brass... sadly enough. If you are going to use a shopbot, you may as well do the real thing- and not be like some cheap chinese import.

I use Johnson Plastics for a lot of this stuff. They have offices in several different places so shipping is quick.

Corian counter top material is nice to work with.

You might find some scraps at a cabinet shop at a good price.

The plastic is great, but for real metal engraving blanks I have gotten them at www.esslinger.com in the past
