    Default Oars on the ShopBot

    Hi all,

We cut some 1/2 scale oars (only 4' long) on the bot today and was very impressed with the level of finish. These are made in 2 halves then joined together.

I reckon on the 120-60 Alpha we should be able to get 10'6" oars out on an angle to the table. Huge labour saving over the old way.

    Here's a few pics

Neat Andrew, Why 2 halves instead of 2 sided machining like TJ's propeller?

    Hi Scott,

This was a test piece to prove the concept but we'll continue with two halves as it allows us to use thinner stock and also orientate the grain so keep the oar straight.

Labour saving is around 70% of the old way of making by hand.

Knew there was a good reason, forgot about stock(what wood?), should make it less likely to warp and stiffer/stronger. Very nice work, make sure to show clamps

Very cool! How long did the roughing/finishing take? Please do share pics of the finished product on here.
