what kind of vac pumps do people use on small vac pods? how many CFM's?
Where is the best place to get these pumps?

Perry depends on material being used , things like plastic , aluminum , that do not have much leakage , you could use a small pump from Joewoodworker ,

Even porous material like MDF can be held down with a small pump if you use backing paper (sticky shelf liner) on the back of the material.

I use a Gast 3040 V29B...40 CFM @ 20" hg. I got it new on ebay for $200, but added a 2hp motor to it cost me another $200.

I have one of the GAST type double rocker piston pumps (similar to this one). There are always many refurbished ones on eBay for $100-150. Maximum vacuum is about 26" and maximum flow 4 cfm. Unlike the A/C pumps they are made for continuous duty, oil-less and don't emit noxious fumes.

I can run four pods of 4.5"x4.5" size and with somewhat smooth plywood or solid wood the resulting vacuum is usually between 15 and 22". MDF does not clamp well, even with one pod the vacuum can drop to 12" or less, just too porous.

The holding power of these small pods is astonishing. I can not easily pry off a work piece from one of the pods by hand; some leverage is needed.
