    Default loose bit

Make sure that bit is tight. Just saying.

I had one not tight enough and was about to go nuts. Ran dry run looking good try to cut parts not so good.

    Lesson learned!

Carl are you replacing collets at least every six months? One of the things I learned very early! If you have arthritic hands an excellent fact gleamed from this forum is to use collet nuts with a thrust race. These things are just incredible!

Sounds interesting Bob, I'd not heard of these. Do you have a brandname? I'm running a 4HP HSD spindle with ER25 collet so it should be the same nut as you're using I think.

This was clearly my not paying attention to what I was doing.

My day job is eating my lunch. Working 10-12 hour days I came home early after 10 hours that day had a bit of a hard time with the threads. The bit muct have slipped without me realizing.

Actually the 3/8" collet has never been used. I zeroed and kept looking during several dry runs to see the depth and all looked well but with the material it would lose its place.

Oh well thanks for the comment.
My hands are getting a touch of stiffness as well and those wrenches are not friendly either.

I've been using some of my collets for 3 yrs now. It's not the colander date but hr's of use, how they are maintained (cleaned regularly, not over tightened, did you break a bit of have one come loose) that determines the expiry date.

If they show any signs of scarring on the taper then they are meant to be retired. I've only chucked the one newer one I had when I broke a bit. Otherwise I'll use them until they show signs of wear.

I do notice on some of the economy collets I've bought to try, that the steel is not as tough as the name brand ones. They show slight scratch marks around the taper where the nut is. I've gone back to the better ones for daily use, even though I've not had a cheaper one malfunction.

For the record I've yet to have a bit slip. But I clean the spindle, collets and nuts regularly with compressed air, a brass brush and some cleaner once and a while.
