Havin' fun at Maker Faire

We had a great time with the Shopbot gang at Maker Faire. Bill Y. had made some really cool chairs on da bot but we were lacking a coffee table, so quickie project on da bot. BTW the Vectric gang was also there and what a great bunch they are too! Russ

Did they get the Desktop "Max" going? Did you check it out?
Thought of you when TJ said they were crating the proto for the Faire.

Scott, the Max is a dynamite machine. It's what we used to cut out the coffee table. The regular desktop has a single power screw for the gantry the max has an additional or two screws similar to how the bigger machines work with a drive on each side of the gantry. Very fast and powerful. We cut lots of 3/4 inch baltic birch for three days! I didn't take any pix and the one of the coffee table was taken by my great grandkids!

For those that have never been to a Maker Faire or even heard about it, imagine any hobby or craft where the world leader of the hobby or craft is a GEEK! A real techknowfob! Well a Maker Faire is the world gathering of GEEKS! 130,000 plus showing off their skills and projects. Most of the commercial booths have all had contact or doings with Bill Young and crew so we were very well treated by all concerned. Just a lot of fun! Russ

As one of the attendees at Maker Faire, "THANK YOU" for helping at their booth. It was a very popular booth every time I went by...and a very good source of info, answers, ideas, etc.

As I turned to leave on Saturday morning, the "Sneak Preview" 'Max machine caught my eye...and pulled me back into the booth for another chunk of the day as I peppered one of the ShopBot employees with questions (all of which were gracefully fielded).

I took a quick phone photo of the Desktop Max...had to cut resolution/size in half to get it to upload. Click the image to get a bigger version.

I'm glad to hear somebody's giving those a try. That was my first complete project after getting checked out on the ShopBot at a local makerspace. A bit aggressive for a first project but I learned a ton from it!

Getting permission to post the field ended up being very easy (but also very slow). I must admit I was quite surprised to have gotten permission!

With a bit of shuffling, a half-sized bot can easily make these! Especially if you don't need four of them all at once. The stiffeners that run under the shelf and top are pretty much the same dimension as a standard 1x3....which would be cheaper/easier to just buy and cut to length so if you're re-arranging the layout, it might be worth tossing those out entirely and verifying/tweaking the dados they fit into to work with a standard 1x3)....send the results to next year's Maker Faire...
