This a desk I built for my workshop. It was designed in eCabinets and cut on the ShopBot with the ShopBot link. The doors and drawer fronts were then textured using VCarve Pro.

It is all maple plywood except for the doors which are door grade MDF. Sprayed with Sherwin Williams Kem Aqua Waterborne tinted lacquer.

Very nice! It really adds to the overall design. Did you use the texturing tool path or was it a 3d texture? Did a 3d texture last week and was shocked by how long it took on a 16 x 18 panel (8 hours). I haven't tried the texture tool path yet but assume it would be much faster. Thanks for sharing.

I used the texture tool path in VCarve Pro. I think the two doors and three drawer fronts took about 3 hours. With more experience I might be able to reduce that time with faster feed rates etc. I did see in the design phase that just changing things like the max cut depth, length etc can make a big difference in the calculated cutting time without necessarily having a big change on the final look of the textured panel. Also things like setting the safe z height to a minimum can also reduce the cutting time significantly.

Thanks Keith. I am still in experimentation mode and have yet to try the texture tool path. There are so many different parameters to plug in and it seems like a lot of trial and error to get the effect you want. In your case you hit a home run and turned a utilitarian piece into something really nice. With my background in classic woodworking, CNC furniture has never appealed to me. Much of it seems overly clunky and rectilinear and would be greatly improved with some added mouldings or other embellishments. That's exactly what you did with the textured doors and drawer fronts. Thanks George. I agree with you on the design aspect of a lot of CNC furniture. I do think there is a place for the CNC router in your line up of tools, which is why I purchased the ShopBot. At the end of the day it is just one of many tools in the shop, the most powerful of which is your imagination.
