Wanting to change drivers

I have an old 2005 desktop running SB3 and having problems with my x driver. I've changed the motors and cables and determined it has to be the driver. The motor hooked up to the x driver sounds like its not get enough power to turn the spindle so it just chatters. I would like to use the A driver but when I go into the software to reassign the driver nothing happens. I know the A driver is good because when I hook a motor to it and use the return home command is works. I just had the board rebuilt and it worked for about 30 minutes. Any thoughts on why I can't reassign the drivers?
