    Default Wood Moisture Content

When carving wood is there a minimum and maximum moisture content I should try to obtain? I had some white maple that chunked out really bad. It appears to be to moist but I am not sure.

yes all wood needs to be dry around 8% is what you want. the way I used to do it is I had a piece of wood in each species I used hanging in my shop I used a pinless meter to check new wood against the old they needed to be within 1to 2% to be stable. that way I never needed to know exactly the percentage just that they matched.
