    Question Collet Questions

Can someone help me understand Shopbot Collets?

I see that they sell an ER25 Collet which I presume is the top option for collet choice. Can the Spindle on ShopBots handle a Shrink Fit for improved vibration reduction and end mill holding?

The regular Collet and Porta Collet I assume is for the ShopBot desktop version and has less vibration assistance.

thanks for any insights on what tool clamping system folks are using.

I recently purchased a couple extra collets and had to figure out type to buy. I measured the height and diameter of my existing collets and used the following link to figure out that my spindle took ER32 collets. They measure 40mm high and 33mm diameter. At first I thought they were ER25 because that is what I saw offered in the ShopBot store.

    Thanks for the tips.

Good to know that you need to measure for ER 25 vs ER 32 and verify fine vs course threads before ordering.

I was looking at collets from the company that designed the original ER classification and liked some of their new innovations.

I concur with Byron - Shars are very reasonably priced, yet seem to be the best quality collets and nuts I've used to date. I advise picking up one of their wrenches as well.

Byron and Jeff - Thanks for the link to the Shars ER25 mini collet and wrench. I like how the collet holder is minimal to keep out of the way. I just measured the current collets at the San Jose's Techshop and confirmed their PRSalpha uses ER25 collets (1/8, 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 bit sizes) so I think it'll work. The thread size for the collet holder looks the same (course?).

    I have a 3hp colombo spindle with M30 x 1" thread. The regular nut is M32 x 1.5"
