    It’s only necessary to cut the finish pass with a ball nose. Since you are cutting with a very small stepover, some brave souls don’t do a rough cut at all. This works out ok IF you survive the first pass! That’s an improvement that could be made to the program… step down the first pass! In the case of my very large molding, my tapered bit only has a 1” length of cut but the first finish pass is 2” deep. I’ll have to do some clearance cutting.

    I’ve attached a SketchUp rendering of my idea for cutting the legs from square blanks.
