Possible new project

I have been contacted to make two tables 9' long each and chairs for a dining hall being made for a convent. I did furniture for their chapel a few years ago, the furniture was from cherry trees cut down at the site of the chapel.

This time Elm trees were cut down at the dining hall site and I will be using the elm for the tables and chairs. Its still in the design phase I hope they go with what I came up with.

I like that you're using the wood that came from there!
Maybe if you told them it was originally called "Mission Style" furniture at the turn of the 19'th century, and made to be sturdy and functional with the focus on the wood God created rather than ornament?

Thanks Scott, I was originally thinking of going with a shaker style on the chairs but the mission stuff is just so sturdy they should still be in use a 100 years from now.

I am going to have to really sort though the elm they never sealed the ends of the boards before kiln drying I went through that with the cherry last time, 50 percent was twisted and split.

Yeah, I know an auctioneer who bought Stickley lots when it was cheap and out of style for his kids rooms, and then college rooms, and now in their homes...and every time money is tight he says "I wish I had saved all that Stickley"

Yep, I'm afraid my uncle didn't seal my aunt's Black Walnut good enough based on the one split piece I got, such a shame
Got your work cut out for you, but at least you'll have plenty of short scrap for wedges
I still miss the "Prairie" furniture I lost in the divorce, and the dining set with that neat self storing extensions.
Kind of a timeless style.
