There is several inches of overtravel beyond an existing 8' table and lots of botters use that overtravel space at the end of their table for a dovetail jig and/or end clamp for machining ends.
A quick search on the forum will find plenty of examples. No need for major surgery for that.
I split the table on my shopbot. I have a desktop machine, 24 x 32 inch table. I did it primarily to increase the Z capability. I could also use the additional clearance to add a rotary axis. I haven't done that yet.
I think the attachments will show how I did this. I'd be happy to answer any questions.
I have my rotary axis below the table level. I could have used that space (and still can) for edge machining but so far, haven't had the need.
