identifying which generation

Is there a way for a greenhorn to identify which machine they are looking at? In looking at older machines, it seems like the owners themselves aren't real sure. Are there clues such as placement of certain items, etc. It would sure be nice if they had big decals on the side that said prt basic or something. thanks, much.

Take a few detailed pictures of the machine, and especially, the labels on the steppers and the inside of the control box and someone will tell you exactly what it is you are looking at.
