    Default Possible x motor issue.

    Trying to figure out how to get rid of a rattle on one side of my ganty. See videos below. Any help is appreciated.

    Sure sounds like the pinion is loose on the motor shaft!

    When checking the “grub” or set screws, remove it completely first to see if there’s another onr below it…

    Hi Steve.

    Thanks. I just reinstalled the motor a second time. This time I moved it side to side a bit before reattaching it to make sure it was properly seated in the rack and it seems much tighter (still a little bit looser than the other side but not much). Makes me think perhaps I didn't just need to lift it. I needed to "seat" it also. The other thing I noticed is the gear itself felt a tiny bit loose on the shaft. Is it possibly this set screw that I should tighten? I might try removing it one more time and tightening that set screw also.

    The gear or “pinion” on the motor shaft should be absolutely tight! The set or “grub” screws were often installed two deep with the top one locking the bottom one. If you only re tighten the top one, you haven’t tightened the one that’s loose… if this is a stacked grub screw arrangement.

    If you confirm that the pinion is tight, check the amount of backlash in that gearbox and compare it to the others. You can do this with a dial indicator on the X rail touching off on the gantry end plate or with a lever of sorts (large vise grip) clamped to the gear when the motor is off the machine.
