Default Old machine, new problem w/ positioning

Hi - just wondering if there are still any cable
drive machine users out there who may have experience with this problem.

My machine, an old cable drive unit that I've used
for many years without any real problems, has suddenly begun losing position, mainly on the x-axis. Zero the machine, move 36" from there,
then back to zero and it's off by anywhere from
.125 to .25 inches. I've tried about everything
I can think of with no success. Installed newer
    software, recalibrated, re-squared the carriage,
etc. The machine has been moved a couple of times since I've owned it, and this problem surfaced after the most recent move.

This happens both with and without the encoders
plugged in which makes me suspect the encoders -
it is more pronounced on the x axis but the y axis does it also to a smaller degree.

I've sent a help request to Shopbot but have not
    received a response.

Thanks to anyone who can offer suggestions as I'm
    pretty much stumped.
