How to Carve Barn Wood / Dock Wood
I just had a request to carve some names into some "dock wood". Not sure much more about it than that but it's wood from a dock, who knows how old or what condition. I said I'd need to know more and asked some questions and am waiting answers.
IF...it is not rotting and in usable condition, how do I carve it? I've seen a lot of pictures of old barn wood carved, but have no idea how to go about it. Everything I cut is flat and smooth, I assume all this stuff is rough, weathered, grainy, maybe twisted or warped, etc. So how does one go about carving something like that? Somehow I don't think the first thing you want to do with some nice old wood is sand it down...or am I wrong?
