Does 3 D use the same format as 2D cutting?
What are the different formats we can use for 3D?
Are some better than others?
I know my sign guy gives me disks in DXF and AI that work great.

David,
There are any number of file formats for 3D; depending on the software used to create them. 3ds, stl, obj, etc... ad naseum. None are really better or worse, just depends on how you are comfortable creating your 3D artwork.
Partworks 3D can accept STL, 3D DXF, 3DS, OBJ, WRL, LWO, V3M, and ShopBot Probe Files
dxf is the autodesk file exchange format, it can contain either 2D or 3D content.
Ai is an adobe illustrator file, strictly 2D
