How do you make square corners to your raised panel grooves on a cabinet door? I have the two profile cutters from Onsrud. The corners turn out round to the radius of the cove cutter. I see other raised panel doors and it appears that a third bit was used to get the corners square. Which bit is it and how do you program it?

Blake you can use Vcarve and do a V cave to get a sharp corner. If you took that outline and created another outline inset of that one by 1/4 inch or so and create a V carve between the two lines it would work. It rasies the v cutter up at the corner to get a sharp top corner. If you don't want to waste a bunch of time with the v cutter making the circle you could just make small boxes in the corners and do a v bit carve.

There is also a program called free doors. I don't have the link, but I'm sure someone will chime it with it.

I can understand how to do it with a V cutter... however these doors have a cove on them... I know it can be done because my competitor is doing it.

Blake...
You are correct, it can be done. It cannot be done with a flat bottom bit. It has to be done with a bit that comes to a point and the software needs to be able to interpolate a path that makes the bit travel correctly to make the corner square. Maybe your competitior has an ATC or a corner chisel?

I gotta remember where I put those square router bits. :>)

The trick really is going to be finding a bit that matches your profile that has a point. You may have to rethink what cut you want in that area. You can get a roundover with a point pretty easy, but a cove/point is going to be rare if you can find one at all.

Blake you can also select a ballnose bit when you calculate a V-carve toolpath. You did say the doors had a cove right?
I haven't tried to cut one yet but I did preview it and it looks like it at least tries to square the corner. Obviously depth of cut, and the radius of the bit would have to match, or preferably I think, radius should be larger than depth of cut.

While you are searching and cutting I would at least give this a shot. Just might be the answer.

Blake,
The cut that you've shown in the photo is usually made with a V-cutter. Only a V-cutter can make a 'sharp' corner (and the V-cutter has to come to a point - no flat spot).

I described the process on January 23, 2010 in the 10:57 a.m. post: http://www.talkshopbot.com/forum/show.cgi?tpc=312&post=101219#POST101219
