So I have a 25mW laser with a lense to focus and a shopbot... Any real reason to not mix the two?

I can't wait to see how this turns out! I am limited to 12 x 24 with my laser engraver. This is definitely getting my attention!

How big is your bot?

Mike

102"x50" :D

I need to make a power supply and wire in the relay so I can turn the laser on and off and control the power supply. The controlling the power supply part may simply have to be manual. But the on and off is paramount.

We will see how this turns out. If I can get this working in a meaningful way with this super cheap laser I will incorporate a better quality laser. My end goal is to be able to cut MAX .125" but normal use in the 0.0175" or 0.445mm for my metric friends. Ability to etch will be a product of power adjustment.

Let me know if you need any help with that Joe !!! I have a spare 60W tube I might try the same thing with one day.

Blindness is a huge possiblity. Make sure that you are VERY careful.

You'll need to buy some safety glasses that are specially coated to not pass the light frequencies output by the laser. Even reflections of the laser from the part you're cutting can blind you.

If you don't, you might as well hang a sign on your 'bot that reads, "Do not view laser with remaining eye."

FYI I don't think 25mW would even brown paper let alone cut 1/8" material. :)

So I think that this is a true statement. Mostly, it browns paper anyway.

Looking at some 50W heads. Bring Money.

Where would I get one of these? Looking online is a .. Well, you know. I was hoping for an under $300 but fear that may be unrealistic.

BTW: AngusFest Friday? Is it warm enough yet? :D
