WOW!! That is beautiful. What wood/material is that? What is this project a doorfront? How did you design this? How long did it take to do? Good job!http://www.talkshopbot.com/forum/images/icons/icon6.gif

21"x78"x1.75" alder panels for a entry door set. Carving is .625 deep with a .25" ballnose. left panel shows rough pass 1:32 hrs right panel shows finish pass 9:45 hrs. I will finish these sides, flip and repeat the toolpaths. James booth modeled the file as we do not have Aspire...YET.

The machine I have is a pr with a prt z axis and control box...I guess 10 yrs old? but still runs very well, a great testament to the products Shopbot makes. I bought this machine from Ken Zey and as he said when he posted it for sale "...maybe not as pretty or as fast as the new machines but plenty 3d capable" and boy was he right! :D

Thanks for the comments

Gene,
Beautiful work, I can't imagine what you can do when you get Aspire. It's amazing what we can do with these "Bots"

Gene,

Nice job. I really like working with Alder wood and what you are producing looks awesome. The panels look great.

How are you going to finish (stain/seal)?

Please post pics of the final .....

Thanks,

Gene,
Thanks for this post. This answers a question I have been kicking around for about a month now. I have some extra money to do some upgrades somewhere in my business and I was thinking maybe go for the 4G Board upgrade. I have a PRT with a Porter Cable Router that I think we got back in 2001 or 2002? We bought the Shopbot for one customer we were doing a ton of work for at the time, and it paid for itself in the first year. Since then I have moved 800 miles and brought the Bot with me and it is now in one half of my two car garage, but still does a Perfect job anytime I need it. The main reason I was afraid to upgrade was #1, I only use the tool once or twice a week now, and #2 if it ain't broke......don't fix it. Well, seeing your example it has made me realize that I just don't need to change a good working tool. However, Since I am a V-Carve user I think I may put the money into Aspire. Keep up the good work.

If you do upgrade your machine you will love it even more It will be like a whole new machine and the newer software is a real pleasure to use.

Hey Gene,
I just realized you're in Derby. I used to live in Wichita and Mulvane.

I'm going to be in the area in June. I plan to stop by and visit... whether you want me to or not...

Really cool Gene. Did you provide James the vectors and he did the modeling? What does that service cost in a case like this? The sanding and finishing is where it's at with these routers and woodwork... and you really shine there.

I have the 8' rack, 16 40" clamps and 16 50" clamps. This is a great dedicated clamping station.

Whew, those prices are crazy. Shoot, you could make one far cheaper then that unless there is something i don't see about it.

I agree, but I think that with a lot of things I look at. But I am running a business and most times, when I consider the costs of stopping what I do, sourcing, tooling, etc. to set up and produce a quality tool it makes more sense for me to just keep at the project at hand and buy from someone who already figured it all out.

Gene, That thing is really built. Are they really 30lb clamps? Wow!

The finished product looks fantastic! Remind me, was the center carving from solid wood glueups? Then you just made rail/stile door frame? Will you be installing doorknobs? Whats the finish?

I like the picture name "What to do when bored". That would apply to me if I was going to be bored for a month! Those are impressive. Do you mind me asking how much a door like that costs? I just have no idea how I would price something like that if someone asked me to make one.
