View Full Version : Looking for a stitch and glue kayak dxf
I am looking to spend some time teaching my sons basic carpentry and want to also spend some quality time with them building a 16-19' stitch and glue kayak or canoe.
If anyone has a dxf of this type please email me at support@ampedbikes.com

Danny: I don't personally have any but a search for free plywood kayak plans brought up a bunch of stuff including some with dxf's. Here is a link to a site that gathered a bunch of them and the second one down has dxf and mastercam files.

This is still probably the most inclusive web page for all maritime stuff;

Be sure to plan on spending some time browsing.
You can even download "Hulls"a FREE DXF boat building program which will let you "adapt" a variety of existing boat plans, and then cut them out...You might want to "test"some of theses designs in door skins, etc. first so you can tweak ALL parameters...

Heya Bill. Thx. I used hulls and found one in the files. Then exported as a DXF
I re sized it to fit on one sheet I will cut it out of 1/8" MDF just to make sure everything is correct. Then if so I will re size to 19' and make a tandem (so my dog can go fishing too)
For the archives here it is. So if I do not make it now and get a bug up my butt again I will be able to find it. I will refine it today adding 1/16" - 1/8" holes on top and bottom of each line for alignment.
If any of you are a bit bored these are a complete blast to build. I built a Chesapeake Light craft 17' a few years back by hand and it was a lot of fun and inexpensive for a really fun project.

CLC suggested I used okoume but I used cheap luan then used heavy glass and epoxy. If you are having some economic down time building one of these will bring a smile to your face. BTW thats not my picture, just the same model I built.
On a side note, something Bill can enjoy. My friend was going through a nasty divorce and to keep his mind off of it he started walking marinas until he found the hull he wanted. Then for a week straight he left his house at midnight and lofted the hull from another aluminum boat (unsure about the copyright on this type of thing but he extended the beam and lenghtened the boat to 38' I believe and built this by hand with zero boat building experience.

I built a couple CLC designs over the years...a couple Mill Creeks in my pre-bot days and a Passagemaker dinghy a year ago. I asked clc for dxf files for the dingy, but no dice. With enough work I could have plotted the full size plans into an x,y grid to create a dxf, but it was quicker to just punch the lines thru the patterns into the foam core and cut by hand.

Danny,
Thanks for the file. I thought you needed more framing pieces to insure that the shape is right?
No. I brought my CLC to the shop and it only has 3 bulkheads. Its actually really cool watching it come together as you zip tie it and it forms into shape.
Mine is rounded on top I wanted to do this with the hulls program but am not familiar enough with it.

Danny, you made it already?, better not let the missus see this thread. Things take a little longer around my house. Looks great too. I've been wanting to try one. Dubliner
lol, no that was a prebot kayak I was working on just before I broke my knee (the reason I bought my bot, cant stand long enough to tablesaw kitchens anymore)
Also.. Found another, better kayak Ill post DXF or EPS later tonight or tomorrow.
Much nicer lines.
