View Full Version : Update on Ryobi sawstop lawsuit
I just read a post about the guy who sued, and won, Ryobi for his ignorance in working with a tablesaw. Read it and weep :(

They say there are 2 sides to every story. I certainly hope there is another side that makes it even a little plausable that Ryobi shares the blame. However, my faith in humanity is low enough I would not be surprised if it was all 100% true AND the "victim" did it on purpose.
As for the jury, it seems about right. We are entitled to a jury of our peers and when you're an idiot...

That is unbelievable. I guess I missed the boat a couple years ago when I laid my thumb open on my General. The problem was that I felt to stupid for being careless.
Where will this end?

People like this used weed themselves out of the gene pool doing things like that. Good thing the courts are there to make sure somebody else is always to blame.
To quote "If you make something idiot proof, all they do is create a better idiot". I wish they'd stop.
All sarcasm aside its frightening to think that some guy could essentially club himself over the head with a sign that I'd carved and then sue me for not making a softer wood sign.

Notice that this verdict does nothing to encourage safer working practices by the operator or the employer.

The most effective safety lesson, short of slicing yourself on a piece of shop equipment, is something I encountered in wood shop class, circa 1962. Hanging from the bandsaw, incased in a block of transparent plastic resin, was a former student's index finger, sliced off at the second knuckle. This may seem a bit middle ages, but it was effective.
Possibly Ryobi and others could post graphic pictures on the their work surfaces?
What happened to being responsible for your actions? This guy did NOT follow any safety rules at all and still wins. I wish that i would have been a jurior. We would stay deadlocked forever!
