This sign I started to make a sample to show to local vinyl shops in hope to get some sign business. Since I had single piece of HDU I designed it around size.

One more thing left is cut insert letters and paint them and insert in place.

What do you think is it good enough, is it a good idea to solicit some work that way?

Thomas,

I think this is an excellent sign for doing show-and-tell with potential customers. It shows what you can do.

that is pretty sweet on how you got that texture in the background...what is your trick?

Nice looking sign. Is the font on the U supposed to be that way or was it too tight for the bit to cut it out? I always remind myself that just because I have a cnc doesn't mean I don't need a chisel to finish or touch things up that the router won't do. Are you putting letters inside the pockets? If you have just started into the world of dimensional signs I think you are going to do quite well. Very nice design. :)

sounds like you are looking for wholesale work selling to vinyl shops.
Develop a pricing system based on complexity and materials.
make more samples showing an easier level too.
maybe some pvc routed samples, color core, etc
could even offer cut out shapes that they can put vinyl on.
in our area alot of things are being done called "value engineering" which is to make a nice alumacorr shaped sign but put some hdu on that to make part of the sign special. so a customer can have a nice 32 sq ft sign with some hdu carving without spending 3 to 6 thousand dollars.
your sample is beautiful

Clearing or pocketing tool path.
.125 ballnose with .1 stepover :)

Yes chisel and hand tools are always an option, they will add that hand done feeling even if its not as accurate as CNC.
When u look at printed vs. hand painted material what has more value?

Thomas,

That's really nice. I'd love to be able to make a sign like that but haven't really devoted the time req'd to learn how to use ArtCAM well enough to be able to do something like this.

How many bit changes were required and how long would it take to cut something like that?

Thanks
Mike

it took 4 tools with cutting time less then 1 hr. key is to design and everything in 2d. With 2.5d it takes forever.

I'm always glad to see contributors sharpening their skills and Thomas is showing us how it's done. He's learning gilding and showing us excellent texturing and layout design too.

I encourage every to make sample signs like this.
