I have chance to make dove tail drawers for local company. They sent me the size requirements.
Some of the fronts and backs are 5/8" thick. The others are 3/4" thick.
They are all ash lumber. Any ideas on why the thickness is defferent.
Would it make sense to purchase the lumber at 13/16 s3s and just clean it up?
seems like wasted work to bring down another 1/8". I want to ask the customer but don't want to scare him away with a dumb question.
Thanks for any input guys.

I do lots of dove tail drawers and have never found any reason for the diff. in thickness. I would ask them if it's a mistake or what.
Be careful on your pricing especially if you have to fabricate all the stock and finish it. There's lots of competition out there and pricing is pretty fierce. I usually buy all my stock 5/8" thick prefinished and go from there.

David,

The 5/8" and 3/4" are pretty well industry standard sizes in the cabinetmaking world.

You mentioned that these are the sizes for the front and backs of the drawer. If they are using drawer slides, then the side thicknesses can make a difference. For example, Blum Tandem Slides come in different model numbers depending on the side thicknesses of 5/8" or 3/4". See the attached image. It is taken from some Blum literature on Tandem Slides. (By the way, I use Blum Tandem Slides underneath my solid wood drawers, with dovetails, of course.)

drawers are a specific thickness as measuements set by the end user are based on openings in the cabinets and the desired slide choice. i ask for the ourside measurements and the slide type, then order wood machines to the thickness needed, (we stopped size machining wood long ago) the larger thickness is generally used on larger (wider) pan drawers.
