I have an idea for machining out of foam board a 3D terrain model using a DEM file. I have the 3D mesh, but have not gotten around to trying it. Has anybody done this already?

Kevin, this takes me back to my very first post on this Forum. See this thread. (http://www.talkshopbot.com/forum/messages/2/210.html?MondaySeptember1120000148pm)

Kevin,
Yes, I did it using Artcam after getting my map from www.mapmart.com. I also used the program "Wilbur" to manipulate the data between formats.. You have to be careful with the "borders" of your DEM elevatons, because if the "neighboring" parcel has a much higher/lower elevation you'll either have a 'drop off' or a peak above/below the Z range of your parcel.
I believe there is also a program with a name similar to "TopoUSA"which I saw at Staples that gives you any area of the US in either a 3DXF, or 3DS file, so you could thoeretically drag any place you'd want into Millwizard, and start carving..As with all 3D files it can take hours to carve depending on your terrain (so Nebraska will carve faster than New Hampshire...) Bill,
Those are probably the speed bumps on the interstate...( or cow road kill).

VS3D can import USGS DEM files directly. And, of course, VS3D has all the tools necessary for scaling the surface and can output ShopBot files.

Many DEMs can be downloaded for free from:
http://www.usgs.gov

The VS3D home page can be viewed at:
