Last month was our best month ever so far as sales and the worst month ever in the shop we are in. We had so many orders I couldn't keep working because each phase of the process consumed too much space. Even after reorganizing a few months ago... floor space is precious.

Pile climbing...

Good for you guys!!
What i found as a really good and fast way to increase the shop space and create a nice spray booth/storage. Used shipping container mine delivered 40' $1200. Had it placed close enough to the shop that i cut a "door" in the side and one in the shop created a walk way. Insulated the inside with ridged insulation, cut some vent holes and installed a exhaust fan.
Most that come in the shop don't realize that they are walking into a shipping container.

Just an idea.

It's amazing. 20 years ago, used 40'rs were $1200.00.
20'rs are a more...at least 20 years ago.

I'm building a shop similar to this monitor design. The paint area will be 12 x 25.

HARRY,

Here is the problem with having a larger shop...you will go out and buy more tools to fill up that empty space you have, then pile more stuff on top of that...its a vicious circle.

Sean,
How much did it cost to have your container delivered?

Jack,
You are often profound and an astute student of human nature.
What is your opinion of a shop designed to resemble a nautilus?

A design of this type of structure could respond to the demands of the human shop animal proclivity to attract debris known as tools to decorate their courting lair or man cave.

Jack,
The $1200 included delivery. Of course this was about 10 years ago but have heard that they are still about the same cost.
I forgot to say that i did put a door in the walk way so i can be making dust in the shop and finishing in the container at the same time.
Works really well for me.

Kevin,
Your website showed a pic of a "trade secret".
Secrets are meant to be exposed so as a duty to all, I have exposed the true nature of your business.

Great photos of the shops! We have one storage container that is full up with stored things and hay. I was thinking of add another one but it would be difficult to fit close enough to where I needed it. I was looking at the small temp offices too...

However, we are looking to move so I'm not going to invest too much in a bandaid at the moment. I've found a few properties but none of them have quite fit the need. It's kind of like this; I need the house from that property, and the shop from the other, and that barn with the fence from over there... :D

We did find one (almost) perfect property, 28 acres, house was great, shop was 40x50 with AC, great shape, detached mother-in-law's suite for offices and such, fenced in etc... It was in foreclosure but had not been executed yet. There were "domestic" issues and the soon to be previous owner would have ended up with adjacent land that had the driveway for this house on it. Without too much detail the guy was not friendly by a long shot. The numbers were a stretch but reasonable, but with the added domestic baggage it just wasn't worth it.

It went to the court house steps this past Tuesday, I have not looked to see what it went for.

If you do go look you may want to come back and make a wooden leg to kick yourself in the butt!

I bought a forclosure, first, it took about 6 months to get all things resolved, so it is a long process. Then i had to put someone in the house immediately to keep the previous owner from trashing it with a promise i'd pay some of his expenses to leave as long as he leaves it in good condition.
Bottom line is i'll make a 45K profit on a $3500.00 investment when i sell it in 2 years and the new tennant pays all payments and costs in the interim.
Unlike in your case where he would be a constant stick in your side, you may have made the right choice.

Glad things are looking good Rob. We also are runnung out of space. I am looking into pallet racking to store my plywood. 3 units tall by 3 units long. I am looking the used route.

Before you committ to larger space try to remeber what happened to most of us the last couple years. I was thinking of larger space but a wise friend talked me into utilizing what we have.

This economy is still very fragile so be cautious.

Kevin, nice shop. I would love 4000 sq. ft. we are in 2400 now.

Maybe the economy is getting slowly better.
