A guy attached a video camera to an iphone with gps tracking sent it up 19 miles into space, it recorded BEAUTIFUL footage and came back down and landed 30 miles from their location, they tracked it with gps and recovered it. The capsule was made with a shopbot.

that is an amazing video.
I really think that is how we will inspire the next generation of scientists!
simple, real, and a lot of fun.
well done!

thanks for posting it Jack, between that and the Atlanta Braves win last night it is the start of a great Saturday.

Jack,
That is probably the coolest thing I've seen on the net.
I didn't know a balloon could go so high, or an iPhone can be tracked, or that an adventure such as that could be done in such as mall area.
Very cool.

This is SOOOOOO very cool!!! I hope 1000's of kids see it and get a bug to look closer at science as something cool instead of something only for geeks.

I just wish vimeo.com could cache videos like Youtube does. Over my 1mb link the video is starting and stopping and lot. On Youtube I could pause the video, it would stream the rest to my harddrive then I could play it. Maybe vimeo.com can incorporate this feature....

I wonder if he needed to file with the FAA.

I wonder if he needed to file with the FAA?
I was thinking the same thing.
Imagine flying at 500 mph and a video camera impacts an engine or the cockpit window?

Tink! What the heck was that?

Then ... what does the FAA say? Be on the lookout for teeny tiny balloon headed to space and back?

I guess if you are flying at 100,000 feet the balloon would be pretty big.

That is why you ask for forgiveness not permission, because some burecrat will find a reason to say no or burden you will tons of paperwork, or expensive fees....
